Cats are carnivorous animals that need quality food with a high protein content for a healthy and long life. Cat kibble is the simplest and most balanced form of cat food.
How to choose quality cat food?
The choice is very wide and suitable for different requirements, price ranges and individual cat needs. Before deciding on a food, we inform ourselves about various cat food brands and learn how to read and understand the label and its composition!
Nutrition according to cat age
Food differs according to the age of our cat: kittens grow and develop extremely quickly and therefore need calorie-rich food; adult cats need a moderate caloric level depending on possible neutering and activity level; older cats are generally less active, so we ensure the food is not too rich.
Nutrition for neutered/spayed cats or overweight cats
If we do not have a registered breeding programme, it is responsible to spay (females) or neuter (males) our cat. After this procedure, cats often begin to gain weight, so it is best to offer them food with lower caloric content or food for overweight cats.
Breed-specific nutrition
As we are already used to with dogs, breed-specific nutrition for cats is becoming increasingly common. The most popular breeds in Slovenia are currently Maine Coon, Persian and British Shorthair.
Different cat food brands
Perhaps you know the famous names of cat kibble brands such as Royal Canin and Monge? These are established brands of quality cat food, but we should not overlook smaller yet equally quality brands such as Ontario, Libra, Meowing Heads and Advance!
My cat is fussy!
Cats are known gourmets, and some are so fussy they simply refuse to eat certain food! In cats, refusing food is worrying as it can quickly lead to deterioration and health problems. We have many flavours to choose from: poultry, fish, beef, pork, lamb, venison, duck and even insects!
What is taurine and why is it important?
Unlike dogs, cats require a considerably higher percentage of protein in their food. Cats also absolutely need the amino acid taurine in their diet, which is extremely important for feline health and is added to a balanced meal. With home-prepared food it is difficult to ensure the correct taurine content, so for the average cat carer the simplest option is cat kibble containing sufficient taurine. Feeding cats with inappropriate food, such as dog food, is very harmful to them in the long run!
